Following the herd’s establishment, in 1945, great care has been taken in the selection of suitable sires During the 1950’s and early 1960’s a succession of bulls bred in the famous Haven Herd helped to develop a ‘stamp’ which endures to the present day.

Oxhill Laurence

During the 1970’s the progeny of sires such as Rowington Upholder and Atok Kemble brought the herd many successes and in 1980 Westwood Postman was Supreme Champion at The Royal Show. The next ten years saw a time of consolidation when some North American bloodlines were introduced. In 1988 Sugwas Benjamin was purchased, weighing 1026kg before his second birthday. He became a legend in his own lifetime, producing many award-winning cattle and sixteen sons that have all left their mark in breeders’ herds. Perhaps his greatest legacy is the quality of his daughters. They have been described as “Big fleshy milkers”!

The Irish-bred Oxhill Laurence was selected to follow ‘Ben’. The two sires complimented each other and through using them the herd has achieved many successes, including the breeding of Westwood Notable. Weighing over 1600kg at his fourth birthday, he was surely the heaviest British-bred Hereford of the 20th Century.

We continue to seek-out sires that give us the best of what the Hereford Breed has to offer and to use them on our 100% home-bred herd of cows to produce breeding stock for discerning pedigree breeders and commercial cattle producers alike.
